Infertility, miscarriage, may increase stroke risk in women —Study
Site AdminA new study has indicated that women who have experienced infertility, recurrent miscarriage, and loss of a baby before or during birth could be at a higher risk of stroke. According to the researchers, early monitoring of these women, as well as healthy lifestyle changes, could lessen the risk of stroke.
The researchers conducted the study using data from eight studies from seven countries namely; Australia, China, Japan, Netherlands, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The researchers analysed the data from the InterLACE consortium which was established in June 2012 and provides pooled individual-level data on reproductive health and chronic disease.

According to him, putting a spoon, hand, cow urine concoction, and rags in the mouth of a convulsing baby could cause more problems for the child. Such harmful practices, he warned, could even result in the death of the child.
Eating processed meat, fried foods could increase cancer risk —Experts
Site AdminHealth experts have urged Nigerians to reduce their consumption of processed meat and fried foods, noting that eating too much of such foods could increase the risk of cancer. According to the experts, some of these foods contain carcinogens which are compounds that cause cancer, adding that several studies have found links between processed meat and various forms of cancer.
Speaking in an interview with PUNCH Healthwise, the assistant Chief Dietitian and former National Publicity Secretary, Nutrition Society of Nigeria, Olusola Malomo, said high consumption of red and processed meat can increases the chance of getting bowel cancer to 18 per cent.

Don’t drink alcohol while taking medications, pharmacist tells Nigerians

He noted that drinking alcohol while on medication will alter the potency of the drugs and even worsen their side effects.
Adekola stated that most patients do not consider the possibility of alcohol interacting with medications, warning that such interaction could even result in the damage of vital organs of metabolism such as the liver and the kidneys.
The Lagos State Government through the Ministry of Health has unveiled a policy document on safe termination of pregnancy. The 40-page policy document, tagged “Lagos State Guidelines on Safe Termination of Pregnancy for Legal Indications”, sets out guidelines for safe termination of pregnancy within the ambit of the criminal law of Lagos State.
Presenting and launching the document at a stakeholders’ engagement, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Health, Dr. Olusegun Ogboye, explained that while therapeutic termination of pregnancy is permissible under the law in Lagos State.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has said that 62 cases of monkeypox have been confirmed in the country. The NCDC disclosed this in its latest monkeypox situation report released on Tuesday.
The World Health Organisation says monkeypox is a viral zoonosis (a virus transmitted to humans from animals) with symptoms very similar to those seen in the past in smallpox patients, although it is clinically less severe.

Snoring should not be ignored, could cause impotence in men, surgeon warns

The ENT expert urged men who snore to seek medical intervention, warning that the condition when not properly evaluated and treated could cause impotence in men.
Dr. Idris also stated that snoring when not properly managed could lead to social problems in the life of those battling with it. Dr. Idris who works at the Department of Ear, Nose and Throat, University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Kwara State, noted that most people who snore are not aware that they are snoring until someone tells them or a video of their sleep is recorded and shown to them.
A health expert has urged men battling low sex drive to seek help from experts to know the cause of the condition, noting that reduced desire for sex is often treatable once the cause is established.
Dr. Gabriel Ogah, a urologist, explained that the most common reason men experience low sex drive is often due to a decrease in the function of the male hormone called testosterone. The expert said when the level of this hormone decreases, a man will have a very poor and reduced desire for sex.

Why children under five come down with severe malaria during rainy season –Paeditrician
Site AdminA Consultant Paediatrician, Nephrology Division at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Katsina, Dr. Abdurrazzaq Alege, has said that more under-five children come down with severe malaria in the rainy season because they are often exposed to more bites from mosquitoes during the period.
According to the health expert, mosquitoes tend to bread more during the rainy season because of the increase in stagnant water around residential houses. He urged parents to protect their children against mosquito bites, noting that hospital admission of children under five with malaria is usually higher in the rainy season.
A Public Health physician at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Prof. Tanimola Akande, has cautioned Nigerians to be wary of offers of free trips abroad from spurious persons. He noted that such offers of free foreign travel are being used to trick people into organ harvesting scams.
The physician said that Nigerians are already dying from these organ harvesting scams, urging the citizens to be alert and wary of sudden offers of free trips overseas to seek greener pastures even when such offers come from seemingly close family and friends.
A consultant gynaecologist, Dr. Stanley Egbogu, has warned women against using natural remedies for the removal of fibroids. Egbogu who works at Nnamdi Azikwe Teaching Hospital, Awka, Anambra, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Lagos.
Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the womb (uterus). The growths are made up of muscle and fibrous tissue and vary in size. Egbogu said that many women take medicines that claim to be effective in removing fibroids.

The agency said the alert on the product is issued as a result of safety information gotten from the European Rapid Alert System for dangerous non-food products. The NAFDAC public alert with No. 0033/2022 signed by NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Moji Adeyeye, was posted on the official website of NAFDAC.
